they made a statue of us

picnics in graveyards and hand stands at churches...might not seem like normal sunday activities, but we're not very normal, are we...
and aren't they just too cute? here's a song for our weekend, honeymooners. come back soon.

playing dress-up

i got to play with my little sister last weekend while her hubby was off gallivanting at a conference. we tried to act all grown up and married, but before long we were stealing each other's clothes, eating brownie cheesecake for breakie, playing dress-up in vintage shops in toronto, and blasting new music till all hours of the night. it was a perfect start for my end of summer mourning before school starts again.

i don't know what happened in the below picture, but it looks like i did it on purpose, and i like it. below that are our adventures and matt's first concert (when matt and ty could finally hang out with us).

twilight drops her curtain down, and pins it with a star.

about 6 o'clock in the evening, we trudged through the woods to tie strings to trees. this is a bad time for anyone to trudge through anywhere, as it is apparently the mosquitoes' favourite time to trudge, as well (it went a little like, "tyler, this is not as fun as i wanted it to be. mosquitoes are NOT awesome.). however, we finished quickly, went back home, waited till it was dark, and somehow found our way back. we took these pictures.

we love the night.  more pictures to come soon.

sleeping under the stars

our bedroom was getting too...bedroomeyish...so i made a tent in our living room.

and i made watermelon salad to go with tyler's multi-cheese grilled sandwiches. for the sandwiches, we had gorgonzola, smoked gouda, extra sharp cheddar, oka, brie, and parmesan to play with. and he added our fresh basil and a friend's garden tomatoes.

watermelon salad, you ask? probably the best tasting summer salad of all time. try it. trust me.

frying pan: handful of pumpkin seeds and a handful of sunflower seeds, drizzle of olive oil, pinch of salt and pepper, good pinch of chili powder (however much you dare;). roast to your liking. watch out: they pop.

bowl: cut big chunks of half a watermelon. cut similar chunks of 6 oz. of goat/sheep's cheese (i used a stronger cheese called oka, but brie would work too. anything that's a softer cheese and got a good flavour to it, i think). a large bunch of fresh mint leaves (chop most of it up. use a few leaves as garnish later). 3 scallions (i used only 1 green onion cuz that's all i had...). squeeze 2 limes. a good lug of olive oil. pinch of salt and pepper. give a good toss.

serve on plates. sprinkle toasted seeds. you could add a fresh chopped chili as a sprinkle as well, but i accidentally used a habanero and we spent most of the time trying to pick them out cuz they were beginning to burn our nostrils... oops. but it did add a nice spiciness to the salad, so i would recommend something. a chili would have probably been perfect.

enjoy. immensely.

with tuppence for paper and strings, you can have your own set of wings...

flying with kids from the neighbourhood. they love tyler. and his kite. and when we told them how tyler took apart an old tent and sewed it back together again to make this kite, they were, quite literally, willing to lay down their lives for it. in fact, one boy threw himself on the cement to save the kite from crashing...
so here's to that little boy. with this song.

best picture award goes to...

tyler always says i'm the photographer. well, this proves otherwise. long exposure, one try, holding very, very still, summer's best picture. i'm lucky i got to be in it.

i want to wake up in the city that doesn't sleep

washington dc and new york. my two most favourite cities in all the world. and this time i got to go with my mom, phoebe, and heidi. we got our car towed in dc, got all dressed up to see wicked, and had several police escorts in new york (and by several, i mean two...), which only put this road trip on the top-ten-best-road-trips-of-all-time list.
thanks mom. you're seriously the most fabulous mom ever. even in small spaces.

i only hope my kids are as cool as these ones...

sometimes i wonder if i could love my own kids as much as i love these ones...just kidding...i'm sure these kids will get uglier and meaner as they get older, and mine will stay cute and cuddly forever.

i'm only half kidding.

ski school

uncle mega matt taught ski school for everyone this summer. first grade, knee boarding. (no swimming-without-a-life-jacket pre-requisites here!)  ali has taught every single child in our family by hanging on to the back of the board, and i'm pretty sure that's how they all learned this summer. benny was brave (or crazy) enough to stand on the knee board. sam took on the skis. and some of us just enjoyed the ride. here are some that i was able to witness before i was enlisted to help in the water.

art isn't art until someone says it is

my sister is an artist. always has been. but now creates works of art in moments on a cheek or brow. so beautiful, in fact, that there are lineups an hour long to get it done! and, if you're lucky, you can jump in the lake and get it done all over again (if you get in line).
the above picture was underexposed, but looks pretty in sepia. colour below. and chloe, who's an artist as well. i'll ask her to make you a pair of matching glasses.
